Men's Hoops Plays WSU On Saturday On KUSK-TV

AT WASHINGTON STATE COUGARS (4-9, 0-5) - JAN. 12, 2002 - 3 P.M. PT

ASU VS. COUGARS: The Arizona State men's basketball team (9-5, 2-3), under fourth-year head coach Rob Evans, meets the Washington State Cougars (4-9, 0-5) at 3 p.m. PT/4 p.m. MST on Saturday, Jan. 12 at Friel Court. Tim Healey has the radio call on the Sun Devil Radio Network, while Tom Dillon and Tim Kempton have the call for Fox Sports Arizona/KUSK-TV in Phoenix. ASU fell at Washington 81-68 on Thursday while WSU lost to Arizona 92-85. ASU has won eight of its past 11 games after starting the season 1-2.

AT WASHINGTON (JAN. 10): Arizona State shot a season-low 17-of-32 (.531) from the free throw line, including 7-of-15 (.467) in the first half, and Washington shot 30-of-50 (.600) from the field Thursday night as the Huskies topped ASU 81-68. Washington jumped out to a 15-3 lead early and never let ASU get within four and held on for the win. The Huskies 60 percent shooting marked just the third time in Rob Evans' 272 games as a head coach his team had allowed the opponent to shoot 60 percent. Chad Prewitt led ASU with 24 points while Curtis Millage added 15 and Kyle Dodd 10 off the bench. ASU shot just 12-of-41 (.293) in the second half. ASU had a season-high 23 offensive rebounds but did not register a blocked shot in the game. Washington also had ASU opponent season-highs in assists (22) and blocks (10).

SHOOT IT, PREWITT: Senior Chad Prewitt, the Pac-10 Player of the week last week, is averaging 22.0 points and 8.2 boards in the past six games and is 42-of-50 (.840) from the free throw line in that time. Prewitt has seven 20-point games on the year (14 games) after posting just two in his first three seasons (89 games). He has led ASU in scoring in its past six games.

THE WSU SERIES: ASU leads the series 26-23 and has won six of the past eight against the Cougars, although WSU swept the Sun Devils last year. Rob Evans is 4-2 against WSU and is 2-2 against Paul Graham, who like Evans is a former assistant to Eddie Sutton at Oklahoma State. ASU and WSU have played six overtime games, with ASU winning five.


*Freshman Jason Braxton has started the past five games at point guard and ASU is 4-1 in that time.

*Kenny Crandall is 25-of-54 (.463) from the three-point stripe on the year. He has made 64 three-pointers in his career, already 10th on the ASU career list.

*Kyle Dodd has 37 assists and just nine turnovers on the year. In the past six games, he has 15 assists and just three turnovers (123 minutes). In his 75-game career, he has 172 assists and just 72 turnovers, a 2.39-to-1 ratio. He is averaging one turnover every 23.2 minutes (1671 minutes and 72 turnovers.

*Donnell Knight played a season-high 22 minutes vs. Oregon on Jan. 6 and is 8-of-11 (.727) from the free throw line in his past eight games.

*Curtis Millage is averaging 13.9 points in his past nine games and is shooting 38-of-81 (.469) from the field in the past eight games. He also leads the team with 24 steals.

*Shawn Redhage has made 156-of-189 (.825) free throws in his career, the best mark in ASU history.

*Tommy Smith had 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists vs. Oregon State on Jan. 4.

*Awvee Storey had his second-best rebounding game of the year at Washington with nine boards in 16 minutes.

*Brad Nahra has played in 56 games in four-year career.


*ASU is 22-3 (.880) under Evans when it shoots at least 50 percent (12-1 in the past two seasons).

*ASU's 10 three-pointers made at Oregon on Dec. 20 is the most since it made 10 at UCLA on Jan. 22, 2000. ASU also was 24-of-36 (.667) from the free throw line at Oregon, but Jason Braxton was 3-of-11 (.273). The rest of the Sun Devils were 21-of-25 (.840).

*ASU was 18-of-20 (.900) from the free throw line against Canisius on Dec. 28, its best mark since Jan. 24, 1998, when it went 15-of-16 (.938) at Oregon.

*ASU had seven turnovers vs. OSU on Jan. 4, the second-fewest in Rob Evans' 105 games as ASU coach.

*ASU is 9-1 this year when it leads at the half.

*ASU made 18-of-24 (.750) shots in the second half to beat Oregon and held the Ducks to just 4-of-20 (.200) from the three-point stripe.

*ASU is 2-3 this year in Pac-10 play. The Sun Devils started last season 0-7 in the loop, including an 81-60 loss at Washington State. Travel problems had the Sun Devils getting into Pullman at 1:45 a.m. for their 3 p.m. game. The Cougars were 37-of-47 (.787) from the free throw line, including 32-of-37 (.865) in the second half. Awvee Storey had 16 boards in that game and ASU had a season-low five assists. Chad Prewitt played just 12 minutes in that game due to a badly sprained ankle. Tommy Smith led ASU with 14 points, including 8-of-10 from the free throw line. Storey added 13 points while Donnel Knight had 11. WSU led 33-21 at the half.

*Chad Prewitt already has seven 20-point games this year, which already passes team leaders Awvee Storey and Alton Mason from last year who each had six in 2000-2001. Eddie House had 17 in 1999-2000.
