No. 4 Michigan Defeats Oregon In Non-Conference Wrestling

EUGENE, Ore.-The University of Oregon wrestling team fell 30-9 to the No. 4 Michigan Wolverines in front of 878 fans at McArthur Court Friday evening. The Ducks are 3-4 overall, 2-1 Pac-10 and Michigan improves to 5-0 overall, 0-0 Big Ten.
Oregon had the early 3-0 lead after Brian Watson (141) defeated No. 12 Clark Forward 5-4 in overtime of the opening match. The match was tied at the end of the third period and after one overtime, but Watson escaped with 18 seconds remaining in the second overtime to improve his season record to 14-6 overall, 5-1 duals.
At 165 pounds, No. 6 Eugene Harris also won in overtime, defeating No. 13 Charles Martelli , 3-1. There was no scoring in the first period and each wrestler scored a point off of an escape before heading into overtime. Harris is now 18-2, 5-1.
'I was really pleased with how we wrestled in some areas,' Oregon head coach Chuck Kearney said. 'Michigan is a team that is stacked from top to bottom, but we didn't back down. We went out there and wrestled hard and I'm pleased with the effort.'
Oregon junior Eric Webb, who is battling a foot injury, won the Ducks' other match, a 4-1 decision over Steve Heleniack at heavyweight.
Michigan won seven weight classes, including pins at 174 and 184 and a technical fall at 157.
The Ducks travel to Boise State Feb. 1 to face the Broncos at 7:30 p.m.
