Last weekend, the Duck women opened the 2002 indoor season by sending four pole vaulters to the Pole Vault Summit and were paced by junior transfer Becky Holliday. The Sparks, Nevada native cleared a mark of 13-5 1/4 that equaled the NCAA automatic standard of 4.10 meters (13-5 1/4) and also tied the school record. Sophomore teammate Kirsten Riley upped her personal best with a mark of 12-9 1/2 in a different section - a mark equaled by senior teammate Niki Reed - as both easily met the NCAA provisional mark of 3.80 meters (12-5 1/2).

On the men's side at the same event in Reno last weekend, sophomore Trevor Woods cleared 17-4 1/2 to better the NCAA provisional standard by almost four inches, but was not allowed to take attempts at the next height due to time constraints. A pair of Oregon decathletes joined in the success as senior Santiago Lorenzo raised his indoor best to 15-9, and Billy Pappas tied his indoor best of 14-5. Senior Cody Howell ended with a mark of 16-2 1/2 to improve on last year's indoor opener, and junior Jason Slye no-heighted at the opening height of 16-0. True freshman Jonathan Derby traveled on his own and competed unattached and cleared 15-7 - a four-inch personal best from his prep best of 15-3 from the 2001 outdoor season.

In two weekends, the Duck women will send several athletes to the Portland Indoor, Sat., Jan. 26, while the men's squad will send decathletes to a seven-event indoor heptathlon at the University of Wisconsin, Fri.-Sat., Jan. 25-26.
