Huskies Fall To California, 62-50

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Joe Shipp scored 18 points, and freshman JamalSampson had 15 points and a season-high 17 rebounds as California beatWashington 62-50 on Thursday night.

The Golden Bears (12-3, 3-2 Pac-10) won their second straight conferencegame and improved to 11-0 at Haas Pavilion. Cal is off to its best start since1988-89.

Doug Wrenn, coming off three straight 20-point games, scored 19 points andDavid Dixon added 11 for Washington (7-10, 1-6), which lost for the eighth timein nine games.

Although the Bears' defense, ranked first in the Pac-10 Conference, held theHuskies to 50 points, they were unable to take full advantage of the 21turnovers committed by Washington. The Bears shot just 34 percent from thefloor and went 4-for-17 on 3-pointers.

After trailing 33-31 at halftime, California scored six straight points inthe opening minutes of the second half, taking the lead on Dennis Gates'tip-in.

The Bears maintained the lead throughout the second half and widened it toeight points on Shipp's 3-pointer with 2:02 left. Shipp's two free throws inthe final seconds sealed the victory.

Washington never trailed in the first half as Wrenn scored 10 points,including two 3-pointers.
