Three Cardinal Men Advance Into Singles Quarterfinals

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Stanford men's tennis completed their first day of action at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Las Vegas on Friday. Three Cardinal athletes advanced to the quarterfinal round, while one doubles team is still alive in the doubles bracket.

Junior Scott Lipsky, ranked No. 31 in the nation, defeated Allen York of Duke 7-6, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinal round. No. 49 David Martin defeated Romain Haug of UNLV 7-5, 6-1, while No. 43 Ryan Haviland cruised past UCLA's Derrick Nyugen 6-3, 6-0.

Stanford's doubles team of Sam Warburg and Phil Sheng defeated Duke's Mike Yanni and Allen York 8-6 in the first round.

Three Cardinal men failed to advance to the quarterfinals. Freshman Joseph Kao fell to UNLV's Aviram Solomon 6-0, 4-6, 6-1, while Phil Sheng was upended by Duke's Mike Yanni 7-5, 7-5. UNLV's Thomas Schneiter bested Stanford's Warburg 6-3, 6-1 in another second round match.

The Cardinal will be in action again Saturday in the second round of the tournament. Singles quarterfinal matches get underway at 9 a.m., with doubles to follow.
