Jan. 19, 2002

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State's Brittney Hawks recorded her 15th game scoring in double figures this season - and her 12th in the last 13 contests - in the Cougars' 62-50 loss to the California Bears in Pacific-10 Conference women's basketball action Saturday night at Friel Court.

The loss, which extended the Cougars' school record losing streak to 14 games, dropped WSU to 2-17 overall and 0-9 in the Pac-10. California improved to 6-11 and 1-7 in conference play.

Hawks scored a game-high 19 points, which followed up a 21-point performance versus Stanford, Jan. 17. The senior from Rexburg, Idaho also led the Cougars with seven rebounds.

Five players scored in double figures for California led by 12 points from Kristen Iwanaga. Leigh Gregory (11 points), LaTasha O'Keith (11 points), Amber White (11 points), and Audrey Watler (10 points) completed the quintet.

Trailing 30-20 at the halftime break, California outscored the Cougars 27-2 in the opening 12:01 of the second half to take a 47-32 lead with 7:59 remaining. The Cougars missed 14 of 15 shots during the stretch while California made 10 of its 16 attempts including four 3-pointers.

After an Olga Volkova bucket put California ahead 49-34 at the 7:20 mark, the Bears would go nearly five minutes without a field goal. The Cougars would take advantage scoring 10 consecutive points over the next 3:39 to pull within 49-44 with 3:41 remaining.

A lay-up by O'Keith would begin a string of six consecutive California points that gave the Bears a 55-44 lead with 1:35 left. The Cougars would not threaten again.

In the second half, the Cougars shot 7-of-25 (28 percent) while Cal was 13-of-25 (52 percent) from the floor.

'We didn't shoot the ball well in the second half, but they came out and scored at will in the first five minutes,' said WSU Head Coach Jenny Przekwas. 'Offensively, missing the shots didn't help, but we needed some defensive stops and we just didn't get them.'

'I thought the difference in the second half was that we were able to get them back on their heels a little bit,' said California Head Coach Caren Horstmeyer.
