Men's Tennis Shines At National Collegiate Tennis Classic

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Stanford men's tennis continued to make a strong statement at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Las Vegas, Nev., this weekend. The Cardinal captured the doubles championship, and remain alive in both main singles and consolation draws.
The team of David Martin and Scott Lipsky was crowned doubles champions, defeating UCLA's Jean Julien Roger and Marcin Matkowski 9-8 in the final. Martin and Lipsky reached the title match by defeating UNLV's Armaud Solomon and Leslie Eisinga by default and upending UCLA's Rodrido Grilli and Derrick Nyugen 8-5 in the semifinals.
The Cardinal tandem of Sam Warburg and Phil Sheng defeated Allen York and Mike Yanni 8-6 in the first round, then bested Romain Tug and Thomas Michaud 8-6 in the quarterfinals. Warburg and Sheng then fell to UCLA's Roger and Matkowski 8-5 in the semifinals.
On the singles side, Stanford's Martin will face UCLA's Grilli in the championship match Sunday morning. Martin cruised past UCLA's Roger 6-0, 6-3 in the quarterfinals before defeating teammate Ryan Haviland 6-4, 6-1 in the semifinals. Haviland had advanced by topping Duke's Yanni 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinal round. The Cardinal are also represented in the consolation singles bracket, where Sheng and Warburg will meet for the title on Sunday.
