Teevens Names Three Assistant Coaches to Football Staff

Stanford University Head Football Coach Buddy Teevens today announced the addition of three assistant coaches to his staff. Teevens was named the Cardinal's head coach on January 9.
Joining Teevens will be David Kelly as Associate Head Coach and wide receivers coach, Mike Sanford as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach and Peter McCarty as defensive ends coach.
Kelly and McCarty were recently on the staff at Georgia Tech while Sanford comes to Stanford from the San Diego Chargers. Stanford, of course, played Georgia Tech this past season in the Seattle Bowl on Dec. 27.
Kelly spent the past two seasons (2000-01) as the wide receivers coach at Georgia Tech. Previously, he was the wide receivers and tight ends coach at LSU for four years (1996-99) and the running backs coach at the University of Georgia for two years (1994-95). Kelly began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Furman University in 1979-80, then moved on to Dunwoody High School in Georgia where he coached from 1981-93. He was an assistant coach from '81-83 and the head coach from '84-93.
A native of Union, South Carolina, Kelly, 45, played collegiately at Furman University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1979 and a master's in 1981.
Sanford coached wide receivers for the San Diego Chargers the past three years (1999-2001). He brings with him over 20 of coaching experience, including stops at Notre Dame, USC, Purdue, Long Beach State, VMI and Army. Sanford, a 1977 graduate of USC, played QB and safety for the Trojans from '73-76. During his career, USC won one national championship and played in three Rose Bowls.
Prior to the Chargers, Sanford, 46, coached quarterbacks at Notre Dame from 1997-98. He was the wide receivers coach at USC for eight seasons (1989-96), including being named the Assistant Head Coach for the '96 season. Sanford was the QB coach and passing game coordinator at Purdue from 1987-88. While at Long Beach State from 1983-86, he was the QB/wide receivers coach in '83-84 and the offensive coordinator in '85-86. Sanford's career has also taken him to Virginia Military Institute in 1981-82 as the QB/WR/TE coach and to the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1979-80 as the receivers and tight ends coach.
McCarty coached defensive tackles at Georgia Tech in 2001. Previously, he was the defensive tackles coach at Illinois from 1997-2000 and the defensive ends/linebackers coach at Maryland from 1992-96. McCarty was on the same Illinois staff as Teevens in '97 and '98.
A 1978 graduate of the University of Massachusetts, McCarty brings with him 24 years of coaching experience, including 22 on the collegiate level. His career has taken him to Bangor High School (1978), Maine Central Institute (1979-80), Syracuse University as a graduate assistant (1981), American International College (1982-85), Holy Cross (1986-90) and the New England Patriots as an intern in 1991.
McCarty, 46, was ann all-conference linebacker and four-year letterwinner for UMass. He earned his bachelor's degree from Massachusetts and his master's from Syracuse in 1985.
