Several Ducks Ranked High on NCAA Track & Field Qualifying Lists

EUGENE - Only two weeks into their indoor season, the Duck men feature a trio of top-10 nationally ranked track and field athletes, while the women's squad sports a second-ranked entry and two others ranked top 12 in the pole vault.

In this weekend's edition of the NCAA qualifying list, redshirt junior Simon Kimata and his indoor 800-meter Duck debut and NCAA automatic clocking of 1:48.07 from the UW Scoring Meet tops the nation, ahead of second-ranked Arkansas' Chris Mulvaney (1:48.45).

Redshirt junior Micah Harris also debuted indoors for the Ducks in Seattle last weekend with an NCAA provisional effort of 7.87 in the 60 hurdles that ranks him 10th overall, while the national leader is Alabama's Ron Bramlett (7.61).

In the pole vault, Duck sophomore Trevor Woods is tied for seventh nationally (17-4 1/2, 5.30m) with his personal best and NCAA provisional mark from the Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev., on January 12, while Oklahoma's Mike McNamara owns the nation's top mark so far in 2002 (18-0 1/2, 5.50m).

On the women's side, junior transfer Becky Holliday stands second nationally in a four-way tie in the pole vault 13-5 1/4 (4.10m) thanks to her debut in the Pole Vault Summit two weekends ago. Two other Duck vaulters loom close behind - redshirt junior Niki Reed and sophomore Kirsten Riley - who are tied for 12th at 12-9 1/2 (3.90m). Washington State freshman Tamara Diles paces the nation in the event with her best of 14-3 1/4 (4.35m) from the Pole Vault Summit.

This weekend, the Duck men will send several decathletes to the Wisconsin Invitational Heptathlon, while the women's squad will take the weekend off. Looking ahead, both squads return to Seattle, next Saturday, Feb. 2 for the Washington Quad Classic at the Dempsey Indoor Complex.
