Arizona Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving is Defeated by California

TUCSON, Ariz. - The seventh ranked California Golden Bears handed the ninth ranked Arizona men's swimming and diving team its second loss of the season today as they won 130-95. On the women's side of the meet the No. 6 ranked Bears defeated the third ranked Wildcats with the final score of 135-108. The meet took place at the Spieker Aquatics Complex on the University of California campus.
Freshman Aram Kevorkian led the Cats today winning two individual events, the 500y free and the 1000y free. In the 500y free Kevorkian touched the wall at 4:29.02 and in the 1000y free he touched at 9:23.61. Senior All-American Roland Schoeman placed first in the 100y free with the time of 44.27.
The Cats diving squad had a strong performance today as senior All-American Omar Ojeda won both the one and three-meter springboard events. Ojeda scored 379.05 points on the one-meter and 364.28 points on the three-meter. Senior Ruben Vaca captured second place in both diving events, scoring 322.64 points on the one-meter and 317.78 points on the three-meter.
The Wildcat women were also led by a freshman in Artemis Daphnis. Daphnis won the 1000y free (9:57.58) and the 400y IM (4:17.57). Freshman Emily Mason also won an individual event, the 200y fly (2:01.91).
Sophomore Claire Febvay won both the one and three-meter springboard events, scoring 271.88 points and 264.53 points respectively. Freshman Tonia Kunk placed third on the three-meter with 232.88 points.
The next outing for Arizona will be Fri., Feb. 1-Sat., Feb. 2 as the Cats host the Texas Longhorns in the last home meet of the season. The first session will begin on Fri. at 2 p.m. followed by session two on Sat. at 9 a.m. and the third and final session will begin at 2 p.m. on Sat. The meet will take place at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center on the University of Arizona campus.
