Baseball Completes Sweep Of New Mexico With a 8-2 Win On Sunday
Jan. 27, 2002
TUCSON, Ariz.- The Arizona baseball team continued its dominance over the New Mexico Lobos with a series sweeping, 8-2, win at Frank Sancet Field, Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats have swept the season series with UNM for the last five seasons and have won 17 straight games over the Lobos dating back to 1997.
Arizona battled back from a two-run deficit with a four-run fourth inning to take the lead for good. Hitless through 3.1 innings off of New Mexico starter Jeremy DeYapp, the New Mexico pitching staff placed themselves in harms way for the third consecutive day. Brian Anderson got things going for UA after getting hit by a pitch with one out in the inning. Anderson was one of seven Wildcat hitters to be tagged during the three-game series with the Lobos.
A walk to catcher Chris Cunningham placed runners on first and second for pitcher/DH Marc Kaiser. The sophomore right-hander helped out his pitching cause by lacing a single into center field to plate Anderson for the first run of the inning and advance Cunningham to third.
The left handed hitting Thompson powered a DeYapp offering over the head of Lobo right fielder Joe Salas for a two-run triple and a 3-1 Arizona lead. Classmate John Hardy rewarded Thompson with a trip home on a single up the middle for the final run of the inning.
From there on it was all Kaiser (1-0) on the mound, as the second-year hurler never allowed UNM to threaten again. Arizona's wins leader from a year ago went eight strong innings on the mound, surrendering both runs, of which only one was earned. He struck out three Lobo hitters and gave up only a single walk. Tony Sulser struck out the side in the ninth in relief.
Offensively, Arizona was led by Thompson's 2-for-4, 3 RBI outing. Duran and Hardy each paired hits on the afternoon and drove in one run a piece. Duran, who went 4-for-4 with nine RBIs yesterday, homered for the second consecutive day in the eighth inning.
Notes: Arizona outscored New Mexico 37-7 in the three game series ... The Wildcat pitching staff recorded a 2.00 ERA and struck out 19 Lobo hitters while walking only three in 27 innings pitched on the weekend ... Wildcat starting pitchers average 7.1 innings per start in the series ... UA batted .330 at the plate with 32 hits in 97 at bats ... 13 of Arizona's 32 hits went for extra bases ... The three wins over New Mexico was the first season opening series sweep since 1999 for Arizona ... Moises Duran is now 8-for-11 (.727) with eight runs, 10 RBIs, two walks, two home runs and a triple in four career games against New Mexico.
