Bruins Fall In Season Opener to UC Irvine, 6-4

IRVINE, CA - Head Coach John Savage's Anteaters recorded their first victory of the season with a 6-4 win over the Bruins Tuesday at Anteater Ballpark.

UC Irvine took its first lead in the first inning when first baseman Matt Anderson scored on a fielder's choice by catcher Chris Miller.

The Bruins took the lead with a three-run third, highlighted by outfielder Ben Francisco's double to score third baseman Kevin Conlin and second baseman Ryan Rasmussen.

The Anteaters answered in bottom of the the third, when Bruin starter Chris Cordeiro's balk scored Matt Anderson. Designated hitter R.J. Brown's double scored second baseman Effren Trejo to tie the game. UCI took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh with a bases-loaded single by Brown. Third baseman Steve Guthrie's double capped the scoring, extending the lead to six.

UCI starter Glenn Swanson was credited with the win, giving up three runs on three hits en route to recording nine strikeouts and retiring the side in order in six of seven innings.

Freshman Michael Koehler recorded his first save in a one-hit, one-run performance over two innings. Koehler retired the side in order in the ninth to preserve the win for the squad.

Bruin starter Chris Cordeiro left after allowing two earned runs and four hits over four innings, while reliever Kevin Jerkens recorded the loss.
