The UCLA men's golf team travels to Arizona to compete in the PING-Arizona Intercollegiates, Feb. 3-5.

Head Coach Brad Sherfy will send a five-player team comprised of three sophomores and two freshmen, including one player making his college debut.

The Bruins' top player is sophomore John Merrick, the reigning Southern California Amateur champion. Merrick is averaging 73.4 strokes per round with 92 percent of his rounds counting toward team competition.

'John will be an All-American for UCLA someday,' said Sherfy, who began his sixth season in the fall. 'He learned how to win and he has all the tools to be a great player.'

In addition to his SoCal Am title, Merrick captured the Long Beach City Men's Championship last summer and qualified for the U.S. Amateur for the third straight year.

Classmate Steve Conway is averaging 75.7 strokes per round after competing in three fall events and playing nine rounds. Conway finished 13th at the 2001 Southern California Amateur and 30th in the stroke play format of the California State Amateur last summer.

Simi Valley resident Roy Moon completes the triangle of sophomores competing at Arizona next week. Moon finished ninth at the 49er Classic in November, his first career collegiate top 10 finish.

Freshmen John Poucher and Breene Murphy will be making their first and second collegiate appearances, respectively. Murphy tied for 17th at the 49er Classic three months ago with scores of 72-74-77-223. Poucher as a high school player, won a pair of SCGA state championships and led his San Marcos High team to a pair of CIF championships.

'Breene is a very competitive player, who always finds a way into the lineup,' said Sherfy. 'John is a solid player with a great attitude.'

Following the PING-Arizona tournament, the Bruins will participate in the John A. Burns Intercollegiates near Honolulu, HI, Feb., 20-22.
