Swimming Falls To Washington State

Oregon State's seven dual meet winning streak ended as the Beavers (7-3 overall, 0-2 Pacific-10) were defeated 159-103 by Washington State Friday night.

Naya Higashijima and Birte Steven each won two events and placed second in one event to lead OSU. Washington State swam to first place finishes in the other 10 races and pulled away with consecutive 1-2 finishes in three straight events to stretch a 64-48 advantage into a 106-63 lead.

'It was disappointing to lose, but we swam as good as we could under the circumstances,' OSU head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny said. 'Washington State was just a better team. We have a lot of things to look forward to and we should have a good shot Saturday.'

The two schools will face each other Saturday at 11 a.m., and will swim a schedule of 13 events in a meet that Podkoscielny sees as a test for his team.

'Tomorrow is a shorter day, but it is going to be very hard because we are swimming back-to-back meets,' he said. 'It is going to be a true test. It'll show character about this team.'

Higashijima placed first in the 500-yard freestyle and 1,000 freestyle, and the junior's time of 10:19.15 in the 1,000 freestyle shattered Washington State's pool record of 10:22.53. Steven's victories came in the 100 and 200 breaststroke.
