No. 5 Bears Take Season Opener With Double Header Sweep
Feb. 2, 2002
BERKELEY - The No. 5 California softball team (2-0) swept visiting Sacramento State (0-2), defeating the Hornets, 3-2, in the first game and, 4-0, in the night cap, Saturday afternoon at Levine-Fricke Field.
In the first game, senior Jocelyn Forest pitched a complete game including 6 1/3 innings of no-hit ball before surrendering a one out, two-run home run to junior Jillian Bivert in the seventh inning.
The Bears opened the scoring when a Sacramento State error brought Jessica Vernaglia from third base.
In the bottom of the fourth, Cal struck again this time with a towering home run by freshman designated player Kelly Anderson, over the left field fence to give the Bears a, 2-0, lead. In the fifth inning, Kristen Morley opened up with a single to center field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Chelsea Spencer. After Kaleo Eldredge grounded out to short, Candace Harper singled to left field to bring in Morley for the third and final Cal run.
The Hornets threatened with the two-run homer by Bivert, but Forest quelled the threat, forcing Erin Coyne to ground out to short and Amy Hillel to fly to left field to record a complete game.
In the second game, junior Jennifer Deering pitched a two-hit shutout while the Bears scored early to give her a two-run cushion. In the bottom half of the first inning, with a man on first and second base, junior Courtney Scott doubled in her first two RBI's of season, giving Cal the 2-0 edge. In the second inning, the Bears scored again as junior Mikella Pedretti homered to left field with two outs.
Harper started off the bottom of the fifth inning with a double down the left field line. After Jessica Pamanian grounded out to the shortstop, Scott singled, moving Harper to third. Deering helped her own cause as she hit a chopper over the third baseman to bring in Harper for the final score.
Head coach Diane Ninemire collected her 598th and 599th wins of her 14-year career and has a chance to hit 600 wins tomorrow when Cal faces No. 19 Pacific, 1 p.m. in Stockton.
