Men's Tennis Narrowly Edged by Washington
Feb. 3, 2002
EUGENE,Ore. - The University of Oregon men's tennis team was in position to win, but could not hang on, as the Washington Huskies topped the Ducks by a score of 4-3 Sunday afternoon at the Student Tennis Center.
Oregon was strong once again in doubles play, as the tandem of Jason Menke and Martin Pawlowski defeated Washington's Christopher Palmanshoffer and Alex Vlaski 9-8, and partners Odeg Teig and Sven Swinnen defeated the Huskies tandem of Matt Hanlin and Dillon Ruby 9-7.
'We played good doubles this weekend' said head coach Chris Russell, 'That was a positive for us.'
In singles competition, the Huskies gained the decisive edge, as they won four of six matches. The two Oregon victories came from Manuel Kost, who defeated Alex Vlaski 7-6, 6-3, and Sven Swinnen, who outdualed Washington's Pete Scharber 6-1, 6-2.
'We now understand the level we are at, and our goal is to continue to duplicate that,' said Russell.
The next action for the Ducks is Friday, Febuary 8 when they host St. Mary's (CA) at the Student Tennis Center at 1:00 p.m.
