LAST WEEK HIGHLIGHTS: Cougar freshmen were making names for themselves at the McDonald's I Open Indoor Track & Field Meet held last weekend at the U of Idaho Kibbie Dome, Moscow. Marie Muai, from Tacoma, Wash., obliterated the indoor discus mark with a throw of 167-feet even (50.90m), nearly 21 feet beyond Laura Lavine's 1985 mark of 146-8 (44.70m). Muai finished second in the competition, however, behind former Cougar All-American Andrea Thornton's winning throw of 167-6. Brittany Hinchcliffe, from Olympia, Wash., bettered Becky Potter's 1997 toss of 54-8 1/4 (16.67m) by eight inches, winning the 20# weight throw with a heave of 55-3 (16.84m). Darion Powell, from Kirkland, Wash., clocked in at 8.33 seconds in the 60m hurdles, breaking teammate Steve Dwyer's 1999 mark of 8.57. WSU women won 10 of the 15 events contested and three times the winners were WSU All-Americans competing unattached. Other Cougar women winners were: Erin Reed (200m), Tiffany Giles (400m), Angelita Green (800m), Hillary Smith (mile), Tamara Gulley (60m hurdles), Whitney Evans (high jump), Ellannee Richardson (long jump), Blessing Ufodiama (triple jump), Shannon Rance (shot put), and the 4x400m relay. Fifth-year senior Cicely Clinkenbeard, competing unattached until the outdoor season, won the 60m hurdles, while Jeannette Martus took the pole vault and Thornton the discus. Smith dropped three and one-half seconds off her lifetime-best mile time, winning in 5:09.32. WSU's Karla McGee and Stephanie Robinett finished behind Martus in the pole vault while freshman sensation Tamara Diles sat out of the competition with a minor foot injury. On the men's side, Anson Henry, already an NCAA provisional qualifier in the 60m dash with a converted 55m time, ran another PQ time, 6.71 seconds, to win the 60m event Saturday. He also captured the 200m dash (21.78). Cougar men finished one-two-three in the 60m, 200m and mile. Other Cougar men taking titles were: Jon Manthey (800m), Jon Welsh (mile), Dan Wolf (3000m), Rick Collins (pole vault), Jamil Smith (long jump), and Piero Vojvodic (triple jump). Freshman Patrick Harrigan finished second in the high jump but with an identical mark to Damian Olson (unattached) of 6-9.

TEAM HISTORY: Because the Pacific-10 Conference does not sponsor indoor track and field competition, Washington State University competes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation for indoor track season joining teams from the Pac-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic, West Coast and Big West Conferences...the Cougar men's team won the MPSF Indoor Championships last year while the women were team champs in 1999 and 2000...Cougar coach Rick Sloan was named West Region Men's Indoor Coach of the Year by the US Track Coaches Association.
