Cougs Win Baseball Opener

Feb. 8, 2002

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- - Washington State got eight solid innings from starter Eddie Bonine and two hits each from Jeremy Farrar and Wes Falkenborg to open its season with a 7-5 victory against host Cal-State Northridge.

Bonine (1-0) went eight innings, allowing five hits and five runs, while striking out six against the Matadors, who are ranked No. 22 in this week's Baseball America poll. Bill Murphy (1-1) took the loss.

Farrar and Falkenborg each went two-for-three at the plate. Falkenborg, the designated hitter, had an RBI in the third when he singled home Evan Hecker. Farrar collected a single in the third and scored the Cougars second run, then doubled in the fifth.

Unfortunately, Farrar was unable to finish the game because of a possible torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered when he stopped abruptly at third base. Brent Robertson finished the game for Farrar in right field.

'Farrar was the real spark plug for us today,' head coach Tim Mooney commented after the game. 'We need him back, but I don't when that might be.'

Mooney, in his second season at WSU, was more than pleased with Bonine's six strikeout performance. 'He spoted the ball well and had very good mound presence. His fast ball wasn't working, but his change up and knuckle curve were very effective. We had him on a 100 pitch count and he was right on that number after eight innings.'

Brandon Hundt took over for Bonine and pitched the ninth, allowing one hit with one strikeout.

The Cougars tallied two runs in the third to take a 2-0 lead, thanks to Falkenborg's run producing single and a wild pitch that scored Farrar. In the fifth, WSU scored three more times for a 5-2 lead. Hecker scored Justin Hart with a single in the fifth, while Bookie Gates had a sacrifice fly that brought Hecker home. The third run was scored by Mike Andrusco on a passed ball.

WSU's final two runs came an inning later when Jon Baeder scored on a wild pitch and Hart came home on a bases loaded walk to Jeffrey LaRue.

Shaun Larkin carried the Matador's offensive load with a two-run home run in the sixth and a solo blast in the eighth, his sixth and seventh round trippers of the year.

The two teams will continue their three-game series Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. WSU is expected to start Garrett Alwert on the mound Saturday.
