No. 9 Softball Outlasts Florida Atlantic In 10 Innings, 2-1
Feb. 8, 2002
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - In a game pitting two undefeated teams, Washington senior Becky Simpson (Tumwater, Wash.) scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Huskies downed Florida Atlantic Friday 2-1 at the Seminole Challenge at Florida State's Seminole Softball Complex. With the win, the ninth-ranked Huskies moved to a perfect 6-0, while the Owls fell to 5-1 in 2002.
With the game tied 1-1, Simpson beat out the throw to first on a ground ball to second base. The senior then stole second, advanced to third on an error by Owl second baseman Amy Bellisari and scored the game-winner on a fielder's choice ground ball to first base by junior Jaime Clark (Tustin, Calif.).
The Huskies had scored the game's first run back in the third inning when freshman Steph Nicholson (Tucson, Ariz.) reached on a base hit, went to third on a throwing error by Florida Atlantic pitcher Candice Freel and then scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Simpson.
The Owls answered back in their very next at-bat in the top of the fourth, as catcher Heather Wright singled and then scored on a long double to center field by designated player Nicole Myers.
The two schools battled back and forth through the rest of the game as Husky pitcher sophomore Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.) struck out a season-best nine batters before giving way to freshman Leslie Scott (Edmond, Okla.) in the top of the seventh inning. Scott, who earned the win to move to 2-0, got out of a jam in the eighth inning with runners on first and second and one out and then proceeded to retire the side in order in the ninth and the top of the 10th.
The Huskies continue play at the Seminole Challenge later Friday night with a game against host No. 15 Florida State, which is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
