Feb. 8, 2002

MADISON, Wis. - Senior Ilona Kordonskaya won the decisive singles match Friday as the 11th-ranked Washington women's tennis team edged host Wisconsin 4-3 in the consolation round of the National Team Indoor Championships at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

The Huskies (5-1) got back on the winning track after sustaining their first loss of the season on Thursday, a 5-2 decision against No. 14 Wake Forest.

The team competition was tied 3-3 with only the No. 3 singles match to complete. Kordonskaya clinched the Husky win with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over the Badgers' Shana McElroy.

Washington won four of the six singles matches over No. 73 Wisconsin, including a hard-fought 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 victory by sophomore Claire Carter over Linde Mues in the No. 2 spot.

In No. 4 singles, Husky junior Colleen Gray beat Katie McGaffigan by a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 count. Sophomore Erin Hoe was a 6-3, 6-1 straight set winner over Wisconsin's Lara Vojnov in No. 6 singles.

The Badgers won two singles matches, including a 6-1, 7-5 victory in the No. 1 spot by Vanessa Rauh over Darija Klaic. In No. 5 singles, Katie Dougherty worked overtime to defeat UW junior Andrea Coulter by a 7-5, 3-6, 12-10 count.

Washington rallied from one-point down after No. 73 Wisconsin opened the competition by claiming the doubles point with victories in two of three matches. The Huskies No. 2 pair of Gray and Dea Sumantri were 8-2 victors over Dougherty and Teresa Gonzaga.

Wisconsin's No. 1 doubles tandem of Mues and Vojnov won 8-3 over Carter and Klaic. The Badgers No. 3 doubles duo of Lindsay Martin and McGaffigan beat Coulter and Kordonskaya 8-4.

The Huskies will meet No. 21 Baylor on Saturday morning in the second round of the consolation bracket. The Bears dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 5 Georgia on Thursday before winning 5-2 over Old Dominion in the opening consolation round. In the other half of the consolation bracket, No. 9 Fresno State meets No. 17 Northwestern.

Washington lost to Baylor 4-3 last year in National Indoors' second-round consolation bracket action.
