Etter Throws Her Way to New Personal Bests at UW Invitational

Feb. 9, 2002

SEATTLE - In its third trip of the season and second trip in as many weekends to the Dempsey Indoor Complex at the University of Washington, the Duck women's track and field team closed out the 2002 indoor season at the University of Washington Invitational. Junior All-American Mary Etter highlighted the action as she threw lifetime bests in the shotput (2nd, 48-4) and weight throw (3rd, 55-8.5).

In the pole vault, the duck trio of junior transfer Becky Holliday, senior and two-time All-American Niki Reed, and sophomore Kirsten Riley placed first, second, and fourth respectively. Holliday and Reed were tied for first at 13-5.5 when they chose to raise the bar to 14-1.25 and attempt to improve their qualifying marks for the Mountain Pacific championships and NCAA championships, but they both missed, and then had a jumpoff to break the tie. Holliday ended up the victor with a winning vault of13-9.25. Reed cleared 13-5.25 and Riley 12-5.5. Both Holliday and Reed took thirteen jumps in the competition.

On the track, the Ducks moved into a number of alternative events, highlighted by junior Janette Davis's first 200 effort of the season, in which she placed fourth with the fastest time of year for all Ducks, 25.23. Davis also sprinted to a team season best in the 60 meter dash prelims (7.92), and came back to run 7.95 in the consolation finals (6th).

Other personal/seasonal bests and conference qualifying marks came from freshman Katie McKeever in the shot put (7th, 42-11.5), junior Amanda Brown in the long jump and triple jump (4th, 18-8, 4th, 38-7.75), freshman Clarice Hayward-Lee in the triple jump (6th, 37-11.25), freshmen Maegan Traver in the triple jump(12th, 35-11), junior Lucretia Larkin in the 60 meter dash prelims (21st, 8.19), sophomore Annette Mosey in the 800 (9th, 2:16.45) junior Alicia Snyder-Carlson in the 800 (14th, 2:19.18), and freshman Taylor Bryant in the 800 (16th, 2:21.91)

'This is the end of our indoor season now, with some competitive steps made,' said head coach Tom Heinonen. 'We'll have Becky and Nikki competing in the L.A. indoor next week to prepare for their NCAA appearances, but otherwise, everyone else will be back in their training cycles.'
