UCLA Defeated By USC, 71-58

Los Angeles, Calif. - The UCLA women's basketball team fell to USC, 71-58, at the Sports Arena Saturday afternoon, giving the Women of Troy a season sweep for the first time since 1997.

USC closed the first half with a 12-6 run to turn a 22-21 advantage into a 34-27 halftime lead. The Women of Troy widened the gap some more in the second half, bursting out to a 48-33 lead at 13:32. The Bruins cut the lead to 48-40 at the 9:52 mark on a five-point play when Brianna Winn hit a three-pointer and Malika Leatham hit two free throws after being fouled after the shot and then closed to within seven (50-43) at the 9:09 mark on a three-pointer by Whitney Jones. However, USC scored 10 unanswered points to go up 60-43. The Bruins would get no closer than 11 after that.

Jones led the Bruins with a career-high tying 21 points as well as seven rebounds. Winn added nine points, and Leatham scored seven before fouling out. Natalie Nakase recorded six assists.

Aisha Hollans led USC with 24 points. Jessica Cheeks scored 15 points, 13 in the first half, and Rachel Woodward had 13 points, 10 in the second half. Ebony Hoffman led all players with 10 rebounds.

UCLA outshot USC, 44.9%-36.8%. However, the Women of Troy were 25-35 from the free throw line, while UCLA was 9-19.

USC improves its record to 13-10, 9-5 in the Pac-10. UCLA drops to 7-16, 3-11. The Bruins will travel to the Arizona schools next week and will first face Arizona on Feb. 14 at 7:00 pm MT before meeting Arizona State on Feb. 16 at 2:00 pm MT.
