Bruins Win Fifth Straight

KONA, HI - UCLA picked up its fifth straight win, defeating the University of Hawaii-Hilo, 9-4, this afternoon at Simmons Field in Kona, HI. Freshman Wes Whisler picked up his first career win, shutting out the Vulcans in 7.0 innings. The Bruins improve to 7-3, while Hawaii-Hilo drops to 1-20-1.

The Bruins scored their first run in the second inning, and added three more in the third. The 3rd inning was highlighted by Casey Janssen's two-run home run to straight away center field. Warren Trott doubled and Ryan Rasmussen drove him home for the third run of the inning.

Matt Thayer started the fourth inning with his second of three hits, and scored on Casey Grzecka's double. Grzecka added the sixth UCLA run when he scored on Christian Lewis' double to left field.

Whisler was dominant in his first career start. The lefty from Noblesville, IN shut out the Vulcans and allowed just three hits in 7.0 innings. He struck out five batters and walked just two batters.

After scoring a run in the eighth, the Bruins added two more in the ninth. Janssen singled and Lewis doubled and both runners eventually scored.

Mike Davern pitched the eighth inning for UCLA and allowed the first Vulcan run of the game. Nick Lyon came in to finish the game and allowed the other three Hawaii-Hilo runs.

The Bruins will now travel to Honolulu to take on the University of Hawaii in a three game series, starting at Friday at 6:35 p.m. HST.
