Baylor Hands 18-9 Loss to Baseball in Dodger Stadium Opener

Feb. 15, 2002

LOS ANGELES - Catcher Paul Richmond's three-run home run completed a six-run sixth inning Friday and the No. 25 Baylor Bears defeated the No. 6 USC Trojans, 18-9, in non-conference action at Dodger Stadium. Richmond went 2-for-6 with five RBI on the evening.

Baylor improved to 2-3 on the season while USC fell to the same 2-3 record.

Left fielder Tim Hartshorn led off the first for Baylor with a solo shot to left. Richmond added a two-run single to give the Bears a 3-0 lead. The Trojans got on the board in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by third baseman Nick Mosich. USC used the long ball to tie the game on solo shots by catcher Alberto Concepcion in the third and first baseman Bill Peavey in the fourth.

Baylor scored a run in the top of the fifth when a groundball went between Mosich's legs to score Mike Huggins. USC, however, took the lead in the fifth on back-to-back doubles by second baseman Anthony Lunetta and center fielder Brian Barre. Barre scored on a wild pitch by Baylor starter Steven White, giving the Trojans the 5-4 lead.

The Bears' big inning in the sixth started when right fielder Paul Witt hit a groundball that was muffed by Mosich for his second error of the game, one that would prove to be costly. Hartshorn and shortstop Trey Webb singled to load the bases. Reliever Jon Williams walked first baseman Huggins for the first run of the inning. Designated hitter Josh Ford hit a two-run single and Richmond hit his three-run homer with two outs to right.

Baylor took advantage in the later innings of a Trojan pitching staff without the services of three key injured pitchers (Anthony Reyes, Fraser Dizard and Brian Bannister). On the evening, the Trojans allowed 10 walks, two hit batters and five wild pitches. USC has allowed 38 walks through the first five games of the season.

The series will continue tomorrow at 1 p.m. with the series finale on Sunday (Feb. 17) at noon. Both games will be broadcast live on
