Erica Beach Named Pac-10 Softball Pitcher Of The Week
Feb. 18, 2002
TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State senior pitcher Erica Beach (Scottsdale, Arizona) was named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week for February 12-17, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Monday.
At this past weekend's Louisville Slugger Classic Tournament, Beach posted a perfect 3-0 record, including her third shutout of the year. Beach was a main factor in Arizona State winning the tournament title as she pitched 21 innings, striking out 13, while allowing only one earned run.
The earned run was the first all year, snapping a streak of 39 and two-thirds innings. Against sixth-ranked Iowa, Beach did not allow an earned run as the Sun Devils rolled over Iowa, 9-1. Beach also provided some offense as she belted a three-run home run to put the game out of reach.
Against Oklahoma State, the Cowgirls came into the game with an unblemished 8-0 record, but managed only four hits off of Beach as she shutout OSU with seven strikeouts. In the championship game against Illinois State, Beach again proved too much, limiting the Redbirds to only four hits and one run.
Overall this year, eighth-ranked Arizona State is 9-2, while Beach is a perfect 6-0 (3 shutouts) in 42 innings pitched. She has allowed only one earned run (0.17 ERA) with 32 strikeouts.
This is Beach's fifth Pac-10 award of her career. Arizona State has now received 33 honors all-time.
