MPSF Indoor Track Championships Next for Cougar Track

FLAGSTAFF, ARIZONA IS WSU DESTINATION: The Washington State University indoor track and field teams compete this weekend at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track & Field Championship Meet...for the second year, the championships are being staged at the Walkup Skydome on the Northern Arizona University campus in Flagstaff, Arizona (altitude 6,905 feet above sea level)...the WSU men are the defending champions while the women won the team title in 1999 and 2000, and finished third last year (Arizona won the women's team title)...Friday events begin at 12:30 p.m. (MST) with the long jump and end with the 200m dash prelims at 4:15 p.m...Saturday's events start at 10 a.m. with the triple jump and the final event, the distance medley relay races, are set to begin at 2:05 p.m...the University of Arizona will act as the host school for the MPSF see the qualifying standards, the MPSF best marks, and the complete meet schedule, go to

ABOUT THE COUGAR COACHES: Head coach Rick Sloan is in his 29th season with the Cougar track program (eighth year as a head coach, seventh year as mentor to the combined men's and women's program)...he is joined by associate coach Debra Farwell, and assistant coaches Dr. James Li, Mark Macdonald, Kris Grimes, and Francesca Green...volunteer coaches are Dan O'Brien and Bernard Lagat.

RANKINGS: In the Feb. 12 Trackwire Top 25, the Washington State women's team is listed tied for 18th with the University of Miami (Florida)...Trackwire, an online service, uses the weekly rankings to project the outcome of the 2002 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships...the Cougar men are not ranked...rankings in the USTCA Team Power Rankings are 8th for women and 24th for men.

LAST WEEK HIGHLIGHTS: The Washington State women's track and field team competed at the Vandal Indoor Invitational and the two-day Moscow McDonald's II Open meet, both at the Idaho Kibbie Dome. At the Vandal Indoor, the women's 1600m relay team of Tiffany Giles, Ellannee Richardson, Tamara Gulley, and Randi Smith finished second to the team from Cal State Northridge but set the school record and reached an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time of 3:41.62. Anson Henry won the 60m dash in 6.70 seconds with teammates Anthony Buchanan second in 6.74 and Dan Brink tied for fourth with a PR of 6.99. Schquay Brignac, won the women's high jump with a lifetime-best and improved NCAA PQ mark of 5-11 1/4 (1.81m). For the third consecutive week, two Cougars broke their own freshman school records. Darion Powell won the men's 60m hurdles in a time of 8.23 seconds, after running 8.30 last week at Lincoln, Neb. Brittany Hinchcliffe broke her the WSU freshman school record in the 20# weight throw with her third-place mark of 55-feet, 11 3/4 inches (17.06m). Tamara Diles won the pole vault with a meet record of 13-7 3/4 (4.13m). At the Friday portion of the McDonald's II Open Meet, Piero Vojvodic won the men's triple jump with the PR mark of 49-10 (15.19m). The next day, Erin Reed won the 60m dash (7.75 seconds) and led a one-two-three Cougar finish in the 200m dash (24.21 PR) with Ellannee Richardson second and Tiffany Giles third. Other WSU women to win were Anna Blue in the 3000m, Shannon Rance in the shot put, and Brittany Hinchcliffe in the weight throw. Anthony Buchanan won the men's 60m dash in a time equaling his lifetime-best and NCAA Provisional Qualifying time of 6.71 seconds. Bennie Chatman finished second in the race with a PR of 6.73. Oscar Franco-Parra won the mile in 4:16.48 while Paul Nicoletti won the pole vault and Tim Gehring claimed the shot put title for the men. During the Saturday competition, Cougar men bettered 19 personal best marks and the WSU women tallied 10 lifetime-best marks. Whitney Evans, competing at the Hamilton Spectator Games in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, finished second in the high jump at a height of 1.80m/5-10 3/4.

TEAM HISTORY: Because the Pacific-10 Conference does not sponsor indoor track and field competition, Washington State University competes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation for indoor track season joining teams from the Pac-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic, West Coast and Big West Conferences...the Cougar men's team won the MPSF Indoor Championships last year while the women were team champs in 1999 and 2000...Cougar coach Rick Sloan was named West Region Men's Indoor Coach of the Year by the US Track Coaches Association.
