Bear Women Second, Men Third at Holiday Inn Classic

RENO, Nev. - The California women's indoor track and field team finished second at the Holiday Inn Classic last Saturday, while the Golden Bear men placed third.

Nevada won the 13-team women's competition with 142.50 points, with the Bears finishing as runner-ups with 88. There was a sharp drop off to third-place Cal State Stanislaus (43) and fourth-place Cal State Fullerton (37).

In the 11-team men's competition, UC Riverside took top honors with 63 points, followed by Cal State Sacramento (56), Cal (54) and Cal State Stanislaus (42).

First-place finishes for Cal were posted by Tiffany Barnett in the high jump (5-8), Trinety White in the triple jump (40-6) and Dana Lawson in the weight throw (57-1).

Lawson also placed second in the shot put with an NCAA provisional mark of 51-1, with teammate Jenna Johnson in third at 46-2. Cal's Reynda King took second in the triple jump (39-7.25), and Jennifer Joyce grabbed third in the weight throw (52-11.5).

Winning events for the Cal men were Robert Kennedy in the long jump (23-10.75) and Vincent Ibia in the triple jump (47-10). Bubba McLean also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the pole vault, finishing fourth at 17-0.75.

Top performances from the Cal men also came from Jason Gatewood in the high jump (2nd, 6-9),
