Wrestling Dominates Portland State, 38-7
Feb. 20, 2002
EUGENE, Ore. - Oregon junior Casey Hunt (149) started the Ducks off by pinning Portland State's Casey Banks and No. 17 Brian Watson (141) concluded the dual by pinning Stuart Eggertson as the Ducks cruised to a 38-7 victory over Portland State in front of 469 fans Wednesday evening.
Sandwiched in between the two falls were technical fall victories by Oregon freshman Shane Webster (174), junior Eric Webb (Hwt.) and sophomore Jason Harless (133), as the Ducks won eight of 10 weight classes, including five with bonus points. The Ducks also scored six points at 165 pounds after Portland State forfeited the weight class.
'We were very aggressive tonight and that's the mentality we need to have heading into the Pac-10 tournament,' Oregon head coach Chuck Kearney said. 'This dual was a good way for some guys to gain confidence and momentum heading into the Pac-10s as well as the national tournament.'
With the win, Oregon concludes the regular season 9-7 overall, 5-4 Pacific-10 Conference while the Vikings drop to 9-13, 3-6.
The Ducks will now prepare for the Pac-10 tournament to be held in Corvallis, March 2-3. The top four finishers in each weight class automatically qualify for the NCAA Tournament, which is March 21-23 in Albany, New York.
