Women's Basketball Defeats Cal, 58-48

Los Angeles, Calif. - The UCLA women's basketball team downed California, 58-48, in front of 1,043 in Pauley Pavilion Friday night. The Bruins were led by sophomore guard Gennifer Arranaga, who recorded career-bests of 14 points and seven rebounds off the bench.

The Bruins led for most of the contest. Cal's took an early 15-11 lead with 11:25 to play on a three-pointer by LaTasha O'Keith, but the Bruins quickly took the lead back with an 11-2 run to lead 22-17 with 7:02 to play. Arranaga scored eight of her 14 points in that stretch.

UCLA pulled further away in the second half. After taking a 32-25 lead into the locker room at halftime, the Bruins extended the lead to as much as 13 (49-36) with 4:05 to play. Cal mounted a mini-comeback with 1:46 to play, cutting the lead to 49-40, but Natalie Nakase and Malika Leatham hit key free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Joining Arranaga in double figures were Whitney Jones and Shalada Allen with 12 apiece. Allen also grabbed a career-high and game-high 14 rebounds to register her first career double-double.

O'Keith led Cal with nine points, as Cal shot just 22.6% (14-62) from the field. Ami Forney had a team-best eight rebounds.

The Bruins improve to 8-18, 4-13 in the Pac-10. Cal falls to 7-19, 2-15. UCLA will close out the regular season with a home game Sunday at 2:00 pm against second-ranked Stanford. Cal will face USC in a nationally-televised game at 1:00 pm in the Sports Arena.
