No. 2 Stanford Advances To Consolation Championship At NFCA Leadoff Classic
Feb. 24, 2002
COLUMBUS, Ga. - For No. 2 Stanford, the first game on the final day of play at the NFCA Leadoff Classic featured a familiar opponent, albeit in an unfamiliar setting. The Cardinal (12-2) defeated No. 14 Cal State Fullerton (8-8) for the third time this season and second in three days, blanking the Titans 1-0 Sunday afternoon in Columbus, Ga., in a Gold Bracket consolation semifinal.
With an early first pitch scheduled for 8 a.m. EST/5 p.m. PST and both squads braving wintry conditions for the much of the game, Stanford was searching for its third victory over the Titans. Both teams struggled to get going offensively, with the schools combining for just four hits in the first six innings. Stanford's Jessica Allister (Nacogdoches, Texas) single through the infield in the fourth was the only hit on the board for the Cardinal until the sixth inning.
Senior Sarah Beeson (Tucson, Ariz.) blasted a solo home run over the right field fence, her first of the 2002 season, for the only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Beeson, who went 1-2 in the contest, recorded her 20th hit and 13th RBI of the season- both team highs.
Cardinal starter Tori Nyberg (Belmont, Calif.) picked up the victory to improve her overall record to 7-1. The junior allowed just three hits in seven innings while striking out three. Titan starter Gina Oaks was impressive as well, allowing just one run in six innings and fanning eight Cardinal hitters.
Stanford advances to the Gold Bracket consolation championship where it will face geographical rival No. 13 Fresno State (10-4) at 12 p.m.EST/9 a.m. PST.
The box score and recap for Stanford's contest against Fresno State will be posted later today.
