California Travels to Sacramento State
Feb. 26, 2002
BERKELEY - WHATS ON TAP: California (5-5, 1-5) takes a break from the cut-throat competition of the Pac-10 Conference schedule to visit Sacramento State (5-4) in a nonconference tilt.
THE WEEK THAT WAS: The Golden Bears scored a 191.700 against cross-bay rival and seventh-ranked Stanford last Friday night. Unfortunately, the Cardinal tallied a team score of 195.750 to take the competition, dropping Cal to 1-5 in the Pac-10. Once again, freshman My-Lan Dodd shined as she won the bars and the floor exercise en route to a new career-high of 39.225 on the all-around. Fellow freshman Sheilah Buack placed fourth on the floor and junior Lisa Arnold finished sixth on the event. Stanford was awarded the higher event score on three of four events. The Bears came away, scoring a 48.350 against the Cardinal's 48.275 to win the event.
DODD IN RECORD BOOK: She started off her collegiate career with an impressive 39.125 all-around score in her first meet vs. Cal State Fullerton. From there, Dodd has done gone to contribute immensely to a young Bear squad. With her score of 39.225 at Stanford, Dodd placed tied for fourth all-time in the all-around with recently graduated Pari Olver. Two weeks ago, Dodd won the all-around at the California Invitational, tallying a score of 39.075, beating six all-arounders from three different schools.
BEARS GUNNING FOR REGIONALS: All it takes for Cal to make it to the NCAA Regionals is to receive a Regional Qualifying Score (RQS), which puts them among the top teams in the west region. The RQS is determined by averaging the top six scores, with a minimum of three away meets, minus the highest team score. The top 18 teams, nationally, based on RQS, will be seeded and paired into the six regions. The top unseeded teams in each region will be awarded the other three slots in their respective regions in the six-team regional competition. With UCLA, Stanford and Oregon State among the top 18 throughout the season, the Bears (192.405 RQS) have a good shot at making the postseason as an unseeded team in the west regionals.
