No. 17 Cal Returns to Hellman, Throttles Utes
Feb. 26, 2002
BERKELEY, Calif. - The California men's tennis team added to their three-game winning streak Tuesday, dropping the visiting Utes of Utah by a 7-0 score. The Bears improve to 7-3, while Utah drops to 5-4 on the season.
The Bears returned to the courts as heros on Tuesday, for their come-from-behind victory over Stanford three days ago, and treated the home fans to some dominating tennis. On the doubles courts, junior Ben Miles and sophomore Balazs Veress outlasted Utah's Carlson/Poulson duo, winning 9-7. With a loss on the top court and a quick win on court No. 3, Cal claimed the doubles point and the momentum in the match with Miles'/Veress' win. Utah would not come close again.
The Bears swept the singles courts, with not one match extending to a third set. John Paul Fruttero was especially impressive, displaying tight ball control and a series of acrobatic shots to dominate Utah's Nicholas Yip, 6-4, 6-3. Freshman Conor Niland rebounded from his two losses over the weekend to sweep Ute Daniel Carlsson on the third court, 6-0, 6-0. Ben Miles improved to 2-0 in singles on the season on court No. 6, easily defeating Daniel Lohff, a freshman from Sweden.
This weekend, Cal travels to La Jolla to compete in the Pacific Coast Doubles tournament. The event runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
