Beavers Lose To Bruins, 65-57
Feb. 28, 2002
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Steve Lavin had some superlatives for UCLA's victory over Oregon State - most of them bad.
'This was probably one of the most ugly games I've seen in my 11 years at UCLA,' the Bruins coach said after Thursday night's 65-57 win over the Beavers. 'That was without question the definition of winning ugly.
'We played poorly for 40 minutes.'
The Bruins (19-9, 11-6 Pac-10) led all the way but simply couldn't put outmanned Oregon State (12-16, 4-13) away.
After staying with six or eight points most of the game, the Beavers closed to 59-57 with 1:48 remaining.
Matt Barnes then made two free throws and Billy Knight four in the closing moments to seal the win.
Six minutes into the second half, Lavin was so frustrated that he substituted for his entire starting five, all at once.
'The five kids we put in in the second half played good, and Cedric Bozeman's eight assists and the fact we made our free throws at the end were the highlights of the game,' Lavin said.
The five were T.J. Cummings, Andre Patterson, Rico Hines, Ryan Walcott and Dijon Thompson. Led by Cummings' 10 points, the subs totaled 19 points and 10 rebounds while playing around 10 minutes each.
'Teams come in here and step it up against us,' Cummings said. 'There are no easy games for us anymore.'
Knight made four free throws in the final 38 seconds and had 13 points, and Barnes had 14 points, including two crucial, late free throws.
Philip Ricci had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Oregon State.
After Brian Jackson scored on a layup with 1:45 remaining to pull Oregon State within 59-57, Barnes made a pair of free throws for a 61-57 lead.
The Beavers wasted their next trip down the floor, holding the ball too long and being whistled for a shot-clock violation.
Afterward, they deliberately fouled, and Knight made his free throws.
'Oregon State did a good job,' Lavin said. 'They came in and executed their game plan.'
Beavers coach Ritchie McKay said: 'I'm proud of the guys, to shoot 32 percent in Pauley and still have a chance to win. We thought we could come in here and grab a team we weren't supposed to beat.'
Jason Kapono added 11 points and T.J. Cummings 10 for the Bruins, who need a win over Oregon on Saturday if they are to post their sixth consecutive 20-win season.
Jackson added 13 points and Brandon Payton 12 for the Beavers.
The Bruins were up 37-29 at halftime, with Knight leading the way with nine points, all on 3-of-5 shooting from 3-point range. He finished the game 3-of-6 from beyond the arc.
Cummings made all his four shots in the half to add eight points for UCLA. He missed one of his two shots in the second half.
Jackson had nine points and Ricci had six rebounds to help Oregon State stay close in the first half despite the Beavers' going 8-of-28 from the floor (29 percent) to the Bruins' 48 percent.
Oregon State shot 33 percent for the game to the Bruins' 43 percent.
Knight's 3-pointer six minutes into the game gave the quick-starting Bruins an 18-7 edge. The Beavers came back to narrow the gap to 20-16 when Jarman Sample made one of two free throws with 9:44 left in the first half.
Cummings then scored on a follow and Dijon Thompson hit a jumper to build the lead back to eight points, and the only time afterward that the Beavers got the lead to less than four was when they narrowed the gap to 59-57.
