March 1, 2002
CHAPEL HILL, NC - The California baseball team (10-7) split a doubleheader with host North Carolina (5-4) Friday, defeating the Tar Heels, 4-2, in game one, before falling, 7-5, in the night cap. The two teams decided to play a doubleheader due to potential rains on Saturday.
In game one Cal was led by the pitching of senior right-hander Trevor Hutchinson and the hitting of freshman center fielder Justin Nelson. Hutchinson improved his record to 4-1 and threw his second consecutive complete game of the season, giving up five hits in 9.0 innings with one earned run, no walks and eight strikeouts. Nelson sparked the Bears, who were down 2-0 at the time, with a lead-off homer in the sixth inning off of North Carolina starter Scott Autrey (0-1, 6.3 innings, seven hits, three runs, one walk, four strikeouts).
Cal then responded with two runs in the seventh innings on back-to-back RBI singles by Ben Conley and Jeff Dragicevich. The Bears got an insurance run in the eighth inning on a fielder's choice RBI by Brian Horwitz for the 4-2 victory.
