Beavers Send Three To Pac-10 Finals

March 2, 2002

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State advanced three wrestlers to the championship finals of the Pacific-10 Wrestling Championships, which began Saturday at Gill Coliseum. OSU 174-pounder Nathan Coy, 184-pounder Isaac Weber and heavyweight Jason Cooley will all be in Sunday's finals, which begin at 6 p.m.

Remaining in the wrestleback bracket for the Beavers are 125-pounder Michael Delaney, 133-pounder Nathan Navarro, 165-pounder Jed Pennell and 197-pounder Jason Lovell, they can finish as high as third place. All four will be in the wrestleback quarterfinals Sunday morning starting at 11 a.m., a win in that round would assure them a top-four finish and a trip to the NCAA Championships in Albany, N.Y. from March 21-23.

The Beavers had two wrestlers knocked out of the tournament by injuries - 141-pounder Casey Horn and 149-pounder Jordan Barich. Both were hurt in their quarterfinal matches, then forfeited their first-round wrestleback bouts.

Coy, the defending champion at 174 pounds and ranked 12th nationally by Amateur Wrestling News, pinned Arizona State's Chris Petrie in 5:58 in the quarterfinals and then received an injury default over Portland State's fourth-seeded Quinn Collett in 1:13 in the semifinals. Coy had taken Collett to his back and appeared to be closing in on a pin when the match was called.

Coy will meet 13th-ranked Steve Strange of Cal Poly in the finals. A year ago, Coy pinned Strange in 4:54 in the championship match.

Cooley, who won the heavyweight title in 2000 and is ranked seventh, topped California-Davis' Flynn Ficker 10-1 in the quarterfinals. That set up a semifinal meeting with Oregon's Eric Webb, who is ranked 17th, Cooley earned a 4-2 win to reach the final for the third straight year.

Cooley's opponent will be ninth-ranked Kellan Fluckiger of Arizona State in a rematch of last season's heavyweight final. A year ago, Fluckiger took an 8-5 victory over Cooley.

Weber, ranked 15th nationally, will be in his first Pacific-10 final after beating Arizona State's Will Carr 10-3 and Cal Poly's Charles Sandlin 3-1. Weber will meet Portland State's top-seeded Jeremy Wilson, last season's runner-up who is ranked 20th nationally but beat Weber 6-4 in a dual meet earlier this season.
