Cougar Women's Relay Blazes to School Record Time

March 2, 2002

SEATTLE, Wash. -- The Washington State women's 4x400m relay team ran a school record time of 3 minutes, 37.54 seconds at the Washington Qualifier Indoor Meet at the Dempsey Indoor Complex Saturday.

The Cougar squad of Tiffany Giles (Seattle), Tamara Gulley (San Jose, Calif.), Randi Smith (Valencia, Calif.) and Ellannee Richardson (Gladstone, Ore.) finished second to the UCLA 1600m relay team who clocked in with a season-best time of 3:35.98. The WSU women came to the meet to race against UCLA and Cal State Northridge and improve from their earlier time of 3:41.62, 20th best nationally.

'I think this time will be 13th nationally and only three-one hundredths of a second from the 12th place school,' Cougar coach Rick Sloan said. 'That puts us on the bubble and we don't know how other teams ran across the country so we have to wait until Monday night to see if we make it in the NCAA Championships.'

Also competing in Seattle was Shannon Rance (Renton) who finished a disappointing fifth in the women's shot put with a throw of 46-feet, 8 3/4 inches.

Cougars Improve Indoor Marks at McDonald's Last Chance Meet

MOSCOW, Idaho -- Washington State indoor track teams tallied 30 lifetime best marks and three school records at the McDonald's Last Chance Meet Friday and Saturday at the Idaho Kibbie Dome.

The women's distance medley relay team of Hillary Smith, Erin Reed, Angelita Green and Anna Blue clocked in with a school record time of 11:49.33. Smith and Blue were members of the previous record relay team which ran an 11:51.34 at Moscow last year.

Five consecutive weeks equals five freshman indoor weight throw records for Brittany Hinchcliffe (Olympia). Friday night's winning toss was 56-8 1/2 and surpassed her record throw last week by 3 3/4 inches.

For the first time in school history, an all freshman team ran the men's distance medley relay. Justin Ireland (Issaquah), Dione Cason (Long Beach, Calif.), Jon Manthey (Federal Way), and Dan Wolf (Reno, Nev.) ran the Friday DMR uncontested in a time of 10:05.44.

Winning efforts for WSU men at the Last Chance meet included Anson Henry in the 60m dash, Manthey in the 800m, Ian Johnson and Jon Welsh going one-two in the mile, Oscar Franco-Parra leading four Cougs in the 3000m, Pat Harrigan in the high jump, Rick Collins and teammates finishing first through fourth in the pole vault, and Tim Gehring in the shot put.
