Freshman Matt Gentry Advances to Championship Final at Pac-10 Wrestling Championships

Stanford dropped to seventh place with 37 team points at the Pac-10 Conference Championships, but freshman Matt Gentry (Grants Pass, OR/North Valley) advanced to the championship match at 149. Four Cardinal wrestlers will compete tomorrow on the final day.

Gentry finished the day at 2-0 with decisions over Matt Cox (Cal Poly) and Thomas Juarez (CSUB). He will face top-seeded Collin Robertson (Boise State) in the championship bout tomorrow. Robertson is also 2-0 after the first day of competition and posted one fall and a 5-1 decision over his opponents. Gentry and Robertson faced each other in the championship match at the Aggie Open on January 12. Robertson took the match in a 10-7 decision.

Sophomore Nathan Peterson (Georgetown, IN/Floyd Central) posted a 3-1 record to put himself in the consolation semifinals tomorrow at 125. Peterson began the day with a major decision over Oregon State's Michael Delaney, but dropped his next match to fourth-seeded Matt Sanchez (CSUB). He fought back in Session II, with a 7-3 win over UC Davis' Tommy Schurkamp and a 5-2 decision over Cal Poly's Justin Picahrdo. He will face the two-seed Mike Simpson of Arizona State tomorrow morning. Peterson and Simpson wrestled earlier this season at the Las Vegas Invitational in December. Simpson earned a 7-1 decision.

Freshman Brad Metzler (Omaha, NE/Westside) and senior Levi Weikel-Magden (Boardman, OR/Riverside) will also face off in the consolations semifinals tomorrow at 141 and 157, respectively. Metzler and Weikel-Magden both dropped their afternoon matches to Oregon wrestlers. Brian Watson took a 7-2 decision over Metzler, while second-seeded Tony Overstake handed Weikel-Magden a 13-4 loss. Metzler will meet Ryan Meloche (CSUB) and Weikel-Magden will square off against top-seeded Rocky Smart (Arizona State) who was upset in his first match of the day.

Competition resumes at 11 a.m. Sunday, March 3. Session III includes consolation semifinals and fifth-place and third-place finals. Session IV begins at 6 p.m. on Sunday and includes the championship finals.
