No. 12 Softball Earns Pair Of Wins At The Red Desert Classic
March 2, 2002
ST. GEORGE, Utah - The 12th-ranked Washington softball team picked up its second and third straight wins of the weekend, edging Utah State 1-0 and then defeating Utah 4-1 Saturday in second day action at the Red Desert Classic. With the wins, the Huskies moved to 19-7 overall and 3-1 in tournament play at the Canyons Softball Complex.
In day's opener with Utah State (1-13), the Huskies had several chances to score early, advancing runners to second and third base in both the first and fourth innings. Aggie pitcher, Kristin Hommel (0-6), however, did not allow the UW to hit the ball out of the infield, as a pop up and two ground outs ended the threat in the first and a foul-out and another ground out dashed the Huskies' hopes in the fourth.
After a pair of singles did not lead to any runs in the fifth, the UW recorded the game's only run in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore Amanda Oleson (Agoura Hills, Calif.), who reached on a one-out single, scored on a throwing error by Aggie catcher Breanne Nickle, who was trying to catch Oleson advancing to third base on a wild pitch.
The Aggies, meanwhile, managed just four base runners versus UW freshman pitcher Ashley Boek (Redding, Calif.). Boek allowed only three hits, while walking one and striking out four en route to a complete-game shutout and a 7-1 record in 2002.
In the second game of the day versus Utah (10-20), UW junior Jaime Clark's (Tustin, Calif.) third home run of the weekend, a three-run shot, capped a four-run third inning for the Huskies. The Utes got one of the runs back in the bottom of the fourth, as shortstop Melissa Stahnke came home on a throwing error by Clark.
Husky starting pitcher Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.) kept Utah off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game, retiring the side in order in both the sixth and seventh innings. Bollinger (7-3) ended up allowing just four hits, while tallying six strikeouts to earn her second straight complete-game victory of the weekend.
Washington will finish up play at the 10-team Red Desert Classic Sunday at 11 a.m. (MT) versus UC Santa Barbara, before heading to Seattle to play host to its first home games of the season versus Simon Fraser, March 9.
