March 2, 2002
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The No. 10 University of Texas women's tennis team (7-0 overall, 4-0 Big 12) picked up its biggest victory of the season, upsetting No. 7 UCLA on Saturday, March 2, at the Thousand Oaks Racquet Club in San Antonio. The match was originally scheduled to be played in Austin, but had to be moved indoors due to inclement weather. With the victory, the Horns remain undefeated on the season with a 7-0 record. UCLA drops to 8-1 with its first loss of the year.
'UCLA battled hard and forced competitive matches on several courts,' head coach Jeff Moore said. 'We had to break them down and we accomplished that. The team fought through a lot of adversity today and it payed off.'
Texas was led in singles by nationally-ranked No. 19 senior Vladka Uhlirova (Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic) who defeated No. 4 Sara Walker in three sets at the No. 1 position (7-5, 2-6, 7-5). The victory improves Uhlirova to 6-1 at the No. 1 spot this season.
Freshman Katie Ruckert (Vienna, Va.) was also victorious for UT, downing Petya Marinova (6-4, 6-3) at No. 3 singles. Senior Kaysie Smashey (El Paso, Texas) added to the Longhorns total by defeating Sarah Gregg (6-4, 6-3) and senior Rebekah Forney (New Braunfels, Texas) contributed at the No. 6 spot, taking down Catherine Hawley (6-3, 6-1).
Due to the inclement weather conditions, a coaches decision was made to play singles first and only play doubles if necessary for the overall outcome of the match.
