Oregon State Defeats Gonzaga 9-8 In Baseball

March 2, 2002

CORVALLIS-Oregon State recorded its fourth straight baseball victory with a 9-8 non-league triumph over Gonzaga at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Beavers, now 8-6 on the season, scored their winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning after the Bulldogs (5-7) tied the contest with a two-run rally in the top of the seventh.

Shortstop Will Hudson led off the seventh inning for OSU with a single, his third hit of the contest and stole second base. With two outs, third baseman Brian Barden singled to left field to plate Hudson with what proved to be the winning run. It was Barden's fourth hit of the contest and third RBI. Barden finished four-for-four on the day.

The Beavers' bats were alive all day with 18 hits but OSU could only score nine runs while stranding 13 runners.

'I would have liked to have seen us score more runs when you get 18 hits,' said OSU Head Coach Pat Casey.

While the Beavers didn't take advantage of all of their scoring opportunities, they did play errorless ball for the second game in a row.

'I was very pleased with our defense,' said Casey. 'We made some outstanding plays today.'

Casey was also very excited about the relief pitching of freshman Mike Ekstrom. The rookie right-hander came out of the bullpen to take over for Don Stykel in the top of the eighth inning when Stykel, who had pitched four innings of excellent relief, was forced to leave the game with a groin injury.

Ekstrom came in and mowed down the hard-hitting Bulldogs, retiring six of the seven batters he faced. We walked one batter after two outs in the eighth.

He had to face the heart of the Gonzaga order in the ninth, getting the three, four and five hitters out, including cleanup hitter Nate Gold, who had two home runs to center field earlier in the game.

'Ekstrom had good poise today, especially for a freshman,' said Casey. 'I really liked the way he finished the game.'

Barden, OSU's All-Pac-10 third baseman, hiked his average to .393 with four hits Saturday. 'I was swinging the bat pretty good today,' said Barden. 'I was just trying to make contact and drive in runs.'

Both starting pitchers were tagged hard early and were not around for the finish. Gonzaga's Kyle Nearhood give up five runs in the second inning and was chased after giving up 10 hits, including a pair of triples by Aaron Fausett and Seth Pietsch in the second inning.

Staked to a 5-2 lead, OSU starter Stephen Copeland could not hold on to the lead and he was chased after three innings. Copeland, who normally has sharp control, struggled with his control. While he only walked three batters, he as behind virtually every hitter.

The Bulldogs hit three home runs Saturday, giving them five in the two games. Gold had a pair of home runs, his sixth and seventh of the season, and Garth Blumberg also added a home run.

In addition to Barden's four hits, shortstop Hudson had three hits, as did second baseman Kerisi Reynolds.

Oregon State and Gonzaga will complete the series with a single game at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. Junior left-hander Mark McLemore (0-0) is scheduled to pitch for the Beavers.
