Softball Defeats Gators, 11-1, Wins Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament

March 3, 2002

LOS ANGELES - UCLA completed a 5-0 weekend at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament on Sunday afternoon, downing Florida by an 11-1 margin, highlighted by the eighth home run of the year by senior Stacey Nuveman. With the win, UCLA improves to 23-2 on the 2002 season. Amanda Freed earned the pitching victory for UCLA, bringing her season record to 11-1. The Bruins were the only team to go undefeated in tournament play, posting a 5-0 record. The scheduled second game between the Bruins and Gators was called due to darkness and will not be made up.

Batting as the visiting team, the Bruins scored early and often, starting with two runs in the top of the first inning, with singles from Natasha Watley and Amanda Freed turning into sacrifice flies for Stacey Nuveman and Stephanie Ramos. Florida countered immediately with a lead-off double by pitcher Mandy Schuerman, who would come across as an unearned run later in the frame.

The Bruins took the lead for good in the third inning, plating two unearned runs, then extending their lead to 5-1 in the fourth inning, with Watley reaching base after being hit by a pitch, stealing second and scoring on a single by Claire Sua.

UCLA did most of its damage in the seventh inning, batting around and plating six runs. The rally started with a lead-off home run by Nuveman, her eighth of the season, and finished as a seven-hit, six-run at-bat for the Bruins.

Amanda Freed earned the win for UCLA, striking out nine and walking two. She scattered four hits during her four innings in the circle, and did not allow a runner past second base after the first inning.

UCLA returns to action on Friday morning at the National Invitational Softball Tournament in Pleasanton, CA.
