WSU Tennis Destroys Utah

Salt Lake City, Utah--- The No. 27 WSU women's tennis team won its third straight competition in dominating fashion by defeating the Utah Utes 7-0 Sunday.

The Cougars (3-2) controlled the doubles competition by winning all three matches and the doubles point. In the No. 1 doubles match, WSU's No. 11 tandem of Erica Perkins and Stacy McKenna earned an 8-3 victory over Utah's Ellen Svensson and Irini Kotoglou. Cougars Lorena Arias and Orsolya Sallai won 8-3 at No. 2 doubles, while freshmen Chris Martinez and Zofia Fodor won 8-5 in No. 3 doubles.

'I was pleased with our doubles play today,' said Washington State coach Cari Groce. 'We held our ground and played strong. We were not intimidated and we stayed strong mentally.'

The Cougars won all six singles matches. Perkins, a senior ranked 67th nationally, beat Utah's Linn Ronnberg 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 1 singles position. McKenna, ranked 34th by the ITA, posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Sheri Esrock.

Arias, a sophomore, earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 3 over Kotoglou.

The WSU freshmen showed up and all earned victories. Sallai won 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 over Cassie Kasteler at No. 4 singles. Fellow freshmen Martinez won at No. 5 with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Svensson, while Nora Gaal won her No. 6 match up with Alison Hansen 6-4, 6-2

The Cougars return to action Monday against No. 52 BYU in Provo, Utah.
