No. 47 Arizona Men's Tennis Travels to the Bay Area

This Week: The No. 47 University of Arizona men's tennis team faces No. 3 Stanford, Friday, March 8 at 1:30 p.m., and No. 11 California, Saturday, March 9 at 12:00 p.m., in the Bay Area.
Fall Play:WTT National Collegiate Championships:The Wildcats finished in seventh place at the championships, Sept. 28-30. Senior Steven Capriati finished the tournament at 3-2 in singles play, and the pair of Capriati and sophomore Carl Hagman went 1-4 in doubles action.
ITA All-American Championships:Sophomore Whi Kim and junior Tom Lloyd played their second round doubles match of the pre-qualifying tournament Oct 6, after a first-round bye, beating Jason Pressel and Chris Varga of Ball State, 8-3. In third round action, Kim and Lloyd topped UC Irvine's Jonathan Endrikat and Carl Lumsden, 8-5, to advance to the qualifying round of the pre-qualifying tournament on Oct. 7. In the qualifying round, Kim and Lloyd played a close match that ended in a tiebreaker, but eventually fell to Luiz Carvalho and Jerome Le Belicard of Mississippi State, 9-8 (5). On the singles side, Kim's record is 2-1, and Lloyd's is 0-1 at the ITA All-American Championships. Capriati played the first round of singles in the qualifying tournament, but fell to Auburn's Andrew Colombo, 6-4, 6-4.
USD All-Collegiate Tournament:The Wildcats took the court in San Diego, Calif., Oct. 12-14, for the USD All-Collegiate Tournament. In singles action, Kim and O'Grady advanced to the championship round. In third round action, Kim defeated Jason Pongsrikul of San Diego, 6-3, 6-2, to advance, while O'Grady topped Davey Jones of Cal Poly, 6-5, 6-2. In the flight 1 semifinal, Kim fell to Ricardo Rizo of San Diego in a three-set match, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. O'Grady, playing in the flight 2 semifinal against Oregon's Chris King, lost, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. On the doubles side, the team of Kim and Hagman fell in the second round, after receiving a first-round bye, to the team of Wilson and Hoffman of UC San Diego, 9-8.
ASU Thunderbird Collegiate Invitational:On the first day of competition, Oct. 19, the doubles team of Capriati and Hagman defeated Utahs Corrie Scheepers and Nicholas Yip 8-5. Capriati and Kim advanced to the second round of the singles Gold Draw bracket. Eventually Capriati advanced to the final rounds of the Invitational by defeating Kim. Capriati went on to beat Olivier Chorroin of Arizona State to win the ASU Thunderbird Collegiate Invitational.
ITA/Southern California Fall Regional Championships:The doubles team of Kim and Lloyd made it to the semifinals, but lost to the No. 2-seeded team of Sebastien Graeff and Stefan Suter of Pepperdine, 8-5. Capriati and Hagmand advanced to third round action in singles play before falling to Marcin Matkowski, 6-4, 6-4 and No. 2 Jean-Julian Rojer, 6-2, 6-4, both of UCLA, respectively.
Cats in the Polls: In the most recent ITA rankings Arizona is ranked No. 47. Capriati earned a singles ranking, No. 68 after a successful fall season. The doubles team of Kim and Lloyd, ranked No. 60, finished the fall season with a 6-3 record. Regionally, in the west, Capriati is ranked No. 17 and Hagman is No. 28. Kim and Lloyd also picked up a regional ranking, No. 7 for the doubles team, in the west. To start the 2001-02 season, two Wildcats earned individual preseason rankings. Capriati earned a preseason ranking of 67 from the ITA, while Hagman was 97. The doubles team of Capriati and Hagman garnered a preseason ranking of 16 from the ITA.
Last Match: The No. 47 Wildcats fell to No. 43 Arizona State, 0-7, on Friday, March 1.
Next Match: The Wildcats head to Los Angeles to face UCLA, Friday, March 29 at 1:30 p.m. and Southern California, Saturday, March 30 at 12:00 p.m.
