Sean Deacon Leads Men's Golf At Cleveland Golf Classic
March 4, 2002
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. - -
Oregon State sophomore Sean Deacon is among three golfers tied for 12th after shooting a 146 over the first two rounds of the Cleveland Golf Classic on Monday at the Par-71, 6,815-yard North Ranch Country Club.
Deacon, who won the Northwest Collegiate Classic in the fall, shot a consistent 73-73 to lead the Beavers.
OSU totaled a 614 after rounds of 311 and 303, and is in 15th.
'Sean played well today,' OSU coach Brian Watts said of the Scottsdale, Ariz., native. 'He didn't make any mistakes. The course was set up pretty difficult with the way the wind was blowing. The greens were very fast as well.
'The course beat up the rest of the guys mentally and physically. We just didn't get the job done. Tomorrow we'll come out and play very aggressive golf and hopefully something positive will come from that.'
Senior David Yarnes, the defending champion of this tournament, is tied for 47th after shooting a 77-76--153. Michael Jurgensen and Chance Holmes totaled 157 and 158, respectively, while David Williams came in with a 166.
Twelfth-ranked USC, who hosts the tournament, holds the lead by two shots over Oregon after shooting 581 over the first two rounds.
Washington's Brock MacKenzie shot 139 to open up a three-stroke lead over Fresno State's Nick Watney and Ben Hayes of USC.
The field wraps up play Tuesday with 18 holes.
