Men's Soccer Adds To Recruiting Class
March 6, 2002
The UCLA men's soccer team has added another top youth player for the 2002 season, signing Lukas Mehring from Malibu High School.
Mehring, a midfielder/defender, earned first-team All-CIF honors in 2001 while leading Malibu HS to the CIF Championship. This season, as team captain, he was selected the league Co-Player of the Year after scoring a team-high 32 goals in 20 games.
He is a member of the ODP Region IV team with future Bruin teammates Evan Corey and Michael Gardner and was a two-year starter for the ODP Cal South State team. As team captain of the SoCal United club team, he led his squad to the Coast Premier League Championship in 2000-01.
'Luke Mehring rounds out a class that we are very proud of,' said UCLA assistant coach Jorge Salcedo. 'Luke is a versatile player. He can provide depth for a team in many positions. He has good size and strength and is a very good passer of the ball. He, like the other incoming freshmen, is a good person and will be a very welcome addition to the program.'
Mehring joins five other players who have already signed national letters of intent - Corey, Gardner, Jordan Harvey, Eric Reed and Nate Pena.
