Cardinal Still In First After Second Day Of Pac-10 Championships

Day 2 Final Results

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The fourth-ranked California men's swimming and diving team moved into second place with 468.5 points after the second day of the Pac-10 Championships at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool. Top-ranked Stanford continued to lead the six-team championship hosted by Cal with 637 points. Arizona is in third with 398.5 points.

Three Pac-10 meet records were set Friday night, bringing the total to five overall for the meet. In the 400 individual medley, Stanford's Markus Rogan, who was second in the 200 IM yesterday, took top honors in 3:42.76, breaking the old meet record of 3:43.74 set by USC's Erik Vendt last year. Vendt placed second tonight in 3:44.53. Cal's top finisher in the 400 IM was John Door, who placed third in the consolation final (PR: 3:52.16).

In the 100 backstroke, Stanford's Randall Bal broke a 10-year-old meet record with his victory in 46.35. Cal's Alex Lim garnered third place with a new school record of 46.99. Lim held the previous Bear record of 47.27.

The competition capped off with a Pac-10 record by USC in the 800 freestyle relay. The Trojans clocked in at 6:24.62, ahead of Stanford (6:26.47) and third-place California (6:28.37).

Stanford and Cal placed first and second, respectively, in the 200 medley relay, the same finishing order as the first two relays of the meet. The Bears time of 1:27.43 was the second fastest in Cal history.

Arizona's Roland Schoeman added the 100 butterfly (46.86) title to his 50 freestyle one from yesterday. Mattias Ohlin led the Bears, taking fourth in the third-fastest time in school history (47.39).

USC's Klete Keller defended his Pac-10 title in the 200 freestyle, clocking in at 1:35.25. Cal's Joe Bruckart placed third with a season-best and NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:35.87.

In the 100 breaststroke, Stanford's Michael Bruce took top honors in 53.75, followed by Cal's Bayani Flores (54.82).

Competition concludes tomorrow with prelims at 11 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
