UCLA Women In Fourth After First-Day At NCAA Indoor T & F Meet

The 2002 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Meet is this weekend (March 8-9)in Fayetteville, AR and hosted by the University of Arkansas. The meet isbeing held at the Randal Tyson Track Center. The meet will conclude onSaturday.

Bruin Women Results from Friday
Jeanette Bolden's UCLA women's team, the two-time defending NCAA Indoorteam champions, are in fourth-place after first day results, with 18points. Rounding out the Top Five, LSU is in first-place with 21 points,followed by Florida (20), Arkansas (18.50), UCLA (18) and Indiana/Illinois(16).

The Bruins on Friday were led by their victorious (10 points) distancemedley relay and senior Tracy O'Hara, who placed second (eight points) inthe pole vault.

Here are the complete Bruin women's results from Friday:

  • 20lb. Weight Throw (final) - sophomore Cari Soong placed 10th, with amark of 63-10.25. Although Soong did not score, she earned All-Americanhonors (top eight Americans). It?s the third time in her career she?searned NCAA All-American (2001-02-weight throw, 2000-hammer throw).

  • Pole Vault (final) - O'Hara placed second, with a vault of 13-11.25and earned eight points for the Bruins. The winner was Arizona sophomoreAmy Linnen, who set a collegiate, NCAA meet and Tyson record with a mark of14-10.25. O?Hara adds to her list of NCAA honors. As a junior last season,she placed second at both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor meets and won herthird consecutive Pac-10 vault crown. As a sophomore in 2000, O?Hara wonthe NCAA Indoor and Outdoor meets and set both the collegiate outdoor(14-7.25) and indoor (14-6, since broken) records.

  • Mile (qualifying) - in the preliminaries, sophomore Lena Nilsson hadthe top time of the day, running a 4:43.16, winning heat one and advancingto Saturday?s final.

  • Distance Medley Relay (final) - junior Tiffany Burgess (1200m),freshman Monique Henderson (400m), junior Jessica Marr (800m) and Nilsson(1600m) won the event with a time of 10:58.19. The relay picked up 10points for the Bruins. Coached by Bruin assistant Eric Peterson, thedistance medley relay victory is the 13th UCLA NCAA Indoor women?s eventchampionship in school history.

    UCLA throwers, sophomore Jessica Cosby and junior Chaniqua Ross, willcompete in the shot put, senior Darnesha Griffith is in the high jump,sophomore Lena Nilsson will run in the mile and the Bruins? 4 X 400m relay(sophomore Sani Roseby, freshman Monique Henderson, junior Tiffany Burgess,sophomore Sheena Johnson, senior alternate Ysanne Williams).
