Women's Tennis Swept by 15th-ranked Trojans

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The 60th ranked Duck women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 defeat at the hands of the 15th ranked USC Trojans Friday afternoon at Marks Tennis Stadium.

USC set the tone early, winning all three doubles matches. The Ducks stiffest challenge came from the No. 3 spot, where the duo of Monica Gieczys and Vickie Gunnarsson battled the Trojan's Bernadette Bayani and Melissa Esmero to an extra game, before losing 9-8.

In singles play, the Trojans won the No. 2 through No. 6 matches in straight sets. The only extended set match took place in the No. 1 spot, where Duck senior Janice Nyland won the first match before dropping the final two, and losing 4-6, 6-1, 6-0.

The Trojans win followed an upset of 8th ranked UCLA on Thursday, and improved their record to 8-4, while the Ducks dropped to 7-7. The next action for the women's tennis team is tommorow afternoon, when they face UCLA, with action starting at 1:30 p.m.
