No. 14 Softball Splits A Pair Of Games In Hawai'i Tournament

March 9, 2002

HONOLULU, HI - The No. 14 ranked Oregon State University softball team split a pair of games on Saturday at the Malihini Tournament in Hawai'i. The Beavers lost an 8-inning tilt to New Mexico State University, 2-1, but responded with a 3-2 victory against Loyola Marymount University.

In the opener, OSU scored its lone run in the first inning. Brynnen Guthrie had one of her two hits in the game on two-out shot in the first. Shelly Prochaska reached base on the next at-bat as New Mexico State's shortstop misplayed the ball, allowing Guthrie to score.

With the game knotted at 1-1 at the end of seven, the Aggies capitalized on an OSU throwing error to break the tie and earn the victory.

Steph Adams was the only other Beaver to get a hit against NMS and hurler Monica Hoffman was credited with the loss after entering the game in the fourth inning to relieve starter Crystal Draper.

'It was a very disappointing game,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'We played extremely flat and had no intensity.'

The Beavers rebounded in the nightcap, scoring all three of their runs in the first inning, taking advantage of four hits in the frame. Traci Feldt's single to right field knocked in a pair of runs.

'We jumped on them early in the second game,' said Walker. 'But overall it was a disappointing day offensively.'

Guthrie continued to bat well for the Beavers, finishing the game 2-for-3 with a run scored and RBI. Senior Michelle Chariton had the game's lone extra base-hit with a double and was 2-for-3. Prochaska, Alana Mendoza and Kelly Petersen also got into the action with singles.

Freshman pitcher Kathryn Neufeld picked up the start and was replaced by Kristen Hunter in the third inning. Hunter struck out four batters and recorded the victory to improve her record to 7-3 on the year.

OSU (23-8) concludes tournament action on Sunday, in a single elimination bracket.

'We were fortunate to come out with one win and one loss today, and not a pair of losses,' said Walker. 'We need three games on Sunday to win it all.'
