Cougar Tennis Comes Up Short Against Fresno State

Spokane, Wash.---The No. 26 WSU women's tennis team lost to No. 16 Fresno State 4-1 Sunday at the Spokane Racquet Club.

Senior Erica Perkins was the lone winner for the Cougars. Perkins, ranked 68th nationally, upset Fresno State's No. 22 Kim Niggemeyer 7-5, 7-5.

'Erica's win was huge,' said Washington State coach Cari Groce. 'Erica and Kim have had some great battles before, and Perkins was really determined today. She just kept hitting everything back and hit some very big shots.'

Fresno State opened the match by winning all three doubles matches and the doubles point. Perkins and Stacy McKenna, the Cougar duo ranked 16th nationally, lost to No. 6 Niggemeyer and Simone Jardim 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. WSU's Lorena Arias and Orsi Sallai came up short against Fresno's No. 27 Lucia Tallo and Chole Carlotti at No. 2 doubles, losing 8-1. Cougars Chris Martinez and Zorana Roganovic lost to Bulldogs Courtney Jantz and Chantel Wiggins at No. 3 doubles.

The win dropped Washington State's record to 4-5.

The Cougars return to action March 20 against No. 54 Arkansas in Honolulu, Hawaii.
